4 Myths Around Hydrogen Water Debunked

Hydrogen water has several benefits. Apart from reducing oxidative stress in our bodies, it increases energy levels, boosts enzymatic activities, improves the quality of organs and cells, and suppresses inflammation by increasing anti-inflammatory mediator production. When purchasing bottled water, hydrogen-infused ones are the best drinking water to buy.

However, several myths surround the consumption of hydrogen water that have misguided consumer notions and increased scepticism around it.

MYTH 1: ACTIVE HYDROGEN

The term “active hydrogen” can be a misnomer and misguiding. Although it describes hydrogen water’s therapeutic and energy-inducing properties, people have misinterpreted it to contain “active” hydrogen somehow. This is quite impossible scientifically. A single atom of active hydrogen is too reactive and unstable to exist. Hydrogen contains highly stable hydrogen molecules.

MYTH 2: FREE RADICALS PRESENT IN IT ARE HARMFUL

Indeed free radical is highly harmful to our body cells, but hydrogen water doesn’t introduce any into our bodies. As stated in the above paragraph, hydrogen water has infused hydrogen molecules and not singular atoms. Besides, not every free radical is detrimental to our health. Our body strives for balance more than elimination and complete removal. Multiple free radicals can influence gene expression that further impacts the body’s immune system and the entire cellular signalling system. This includes the ROS/RNS (reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species) and hormone-signalling receptors. Free radical ions include superoxide anion, nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide molecule. These ROS (also known as redox signalling molecules) play a beneficial role in transmitting biological information for the body’s normal functioning.

MYTH 3: IT IS ELECTRICALLY CHARGED

This is another misconception surrounding the consumption of hydrogen water. It is impossible for water to carry any charge as per the principle of electroneutrality. The law states that a sum of negative charges attracts an equal sum of positive electrical charges in any single ionic solution. Since a water molecule is ionic in nature, binding hydrogen atoms by covalent bonds, it cannot carry any charge. This is probably another myth that came from the ability of hydrogen water to energise body cells.

MYTH 4: HYDROGEN WATER HAS A TANGY TASTE

Contrarily, there is no taste in hydrogen water. Unlike sweetened beverages and mineral-infused/flavoured water, plain hydrogen water tastes nothing different than ordinary water. It is pure and holds health benefits for everyone- from kids, adults, athletes to pregnant and women. It helps people overcome several chronic diseases and aids weight loss by activating fat and energy metabolism.
